
Stuart T. Haines, PharmD, AACP President
The 2021-2022 president of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) is Stuart T. Haines, PharmD. Dr. Haines is a professor of Pharmacy Practice and the director of the Division of Pharmacy Professional Development at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy since 2016. He received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences in 1985 and his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy in 1994. Dr. Haines completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston from 1985 to 1986 and an Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center from 1993 to 1994. He has also completed graduate certifications in Instructional Systems Design in Distance Education and Instructional Systems Development from 1998 to 2002.
Dr. Haines started his academic career as an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in 1994. He advanced through the academic ranks while at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, achieving the rank of professor in 2003. He also served as the director of the Community Pharmacy Residency Program in 1995-2000, vice-chair for education in 2002-2008, director of the non-traditional doctor of pharmacy program from 2004 to 2006, director of the fellowship in instructional design and evaluation from 2006 to 2011, and vice-chair for clinical services from 2010 to 2016. He is board certified in Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Practice (BCACP) and Pharmacotherapy (BCPS).
Dr. Haines has a distinguished career as a clinician, educator, and scholar. He is a fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). He has authored more than 120 scholarly papers and book chapters in the areas of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, ambulatory care pharmacy practice models, and instructional design and methods. He also serves as the editor-in-chief of the iForumRx.org, an editor for the textbook Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach, the senior associate editor for the Journal of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, and previously served as a scientific editor for Pharmacotherapy: The Journal of Drug Therapy and Human Pharmacology. He has also served on numerous editorial boards, including the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, Annals of Pharmacotherapy, Current Medical Research and Opinion, Journal of the American Pharmacists Association (JAPhA), American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, and Pharmacist’s/Prescriber’s Letter.
Dr. Haines has been actively involved with AACP and ACCP for more than 20 years. He served as the president of ACCP in 2006-2007 following his service on the Board of Regents (2002-2005) and as Chair of the ACCP Ambulatory Care Practice and Research Network (PRN). He has served AACP in various roles, including chair of the Council of Faculties in 2017-2018, member of the Professional Affairs Committee in 2003-2004 and 2007-2008, member of the 2015 AACP Annual Meeting Programming Committee, and 2015-2016 Academic Affairs Committee. It was the 2015-2016 Academic Affairs Committee that developed the Core Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA) for New Pharmacy Graduates. Dr. Haines has also served on the APhA Foundation Board of Directors (2013–2016) and on the Remington Medal Honor Selection Committee in 2007.
His long-term service has been recognized as a clinician and educator through numerous national awards and recognitions. Dr. Haines is a Distinguished Practitioner and Fellow for the National Academies of Practice (FNAP). ACCP recognized his efforts in ambulatory care and awarded him the 2009 Ambulatory Care Achievement award from the Ambulatory Care PRN. In 2010, he received the APhA Distinguished Achievement Award in Ambulatory and Community Practice. He has also received the 2010 ACCP Education Award and the 2016 Robert M. Elenbaas Service Award. He has received teaching awards from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and is a frequent invited honorary lecturer at pharmacy schools and colleges.
Dr. Haines is a committed and passionate educator and clinical scholar. Colleagues speak of his generosity of time, talent, and expertise that he shares with others to enable their success. He is known as a gifted author, editor, educator, and researcher with a servant’s heart. He is creative and innovative, always seeking ways to improve and find efficiencies in his professional work and personal pursuits. Colleagues shared how easy it is to collaborate with Dr. Haines given his ability to think creatively, his ability to integrate knowledge and concepts in innovative ways, and his commitment to the success of their work. They are inspired by his continuous passion for learning and advancing his ability as a pharmacy clinician, scholar, and educator.
During his spare time, he is an avid photographer, and several of his photos having been featured on the cover of JAPhA. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Seena and their son, Ian. His colleagues, family and friends know him as a remarkable, generous, fun-loving, open-minded, and compassionate individual who is an avid reader with a focus on learning, personal and professional growth.
