The Intersectionality of Pharmacists’ Professional and Personal Identity: A Call to Action!

The profession of pharmacy in the U.S. must promote a unified professional identity to advance practice transformation for the next generation of pharmacists. While efforts to define and embed professional identity and professional identity formation in pharmacy programs are underway, they are generally considered from an occupational perspective. However, personal identity, diversity-and individualistic factors, and developmental influences must be considered and embedded in pharmacy education for effective professional identity formation. Personal identity and its formation are often ignored in this conversation because the profession is focused on establishing a professional identity. To address this, the AACP Strategic Plan 2021-2024 emphasizes professional practice identity of future pharmacists in the context of a culture of pharmacy transformation and change, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, part of the transformation in pharmacy, and the overall well-being of educators and healthcare providers. While the Strategic Plan is committed to change-making, this is simply one starting point. The pharmacy academy can and must do more by examining the influence of self-identity, values, behaviors, traits, emotional intelligence, metacognition, and diversity on student pharmacists’ professional identity. Exploring the intersectionality of professional and personal identity will clarify mechanisms for their inclusion in the curriculum and co-curriculum for PharmD programs. As an academy charged with sculpting the future of our profession, we must expand professional belonging by including personal belonging for effective change-making that continually improves organizational culture and vitality.
