Theme Issue: Moving from Injustice to Equity: A Time for the Pharmacy Profession to Take Action

The recent murder of George Floyd, along with countless other African American and Black individuals before him, highlights the social injustices that have persisted for centuries, and unfortunately, remains today. Black, African American, Latino, Native American/Alaskan Native men are more likely to die from police violence than White men, with Black men being 2.5 times more likely to be killed by police than white men.1 While all of this is heartbreakingly tragic, if one looks at the bigger picture, one sees overwhelming injustices well beyond that of the police. Racism and discrimination effects mortality and morbidity statistics, as we see it in poor health outcomes, unemployment, criminal justice, environmental/planetary health, public health, and educational attainment. Recently, national pharmacy organizations publicly took a stand against racial injustice and advocate for dismantling inequities and working together to promote and uphold social justice.2 While the academy has worked on promoting cultural awareness and sensitivities to our learners, partnered with communities through outreach, performed community-based participatory research, and worked to address health disparities, we can and must do more.
